VOCAL WARMUPS
& EXERCISES
Vocal warm-ups are an essential part of preparing to lead worship. They help improve breath control, articulation, and vocal range. Warming up can also help vocalists sound their best, protect their voice from damage, and maintain a healthy and powerful voice. In order to achieve a greater sound from any instrument, it needs to be taken care of. Just as a guitarist will show up on a Sunday morning, plug in, and check the tuning on his guitar, vocalists must prepare the same way. Vocal cords need to be warmed up, stretched, and slowly introduced to the singing that will be done that day.
God has gifted vocalists with the skill to use your voices to sing His praises. It is your responsibility to take care of and maintain this gift. Correctly implementing vocal warm-ups into your daily routine will lengthen the life of your voice, strengthen your vocal cords, and improve your breath control. Remember that when Psalm 33 says, “Play skillfully with a shout of joy,” it is referring to singers as well, not just the harpists!
